Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between vitamin A intake and trachoma incidance. The survey was carried out in two villages of Diyarbakır. Social and physical eııviroment exception of trachoma incidance were same in both villages. Trachoma incidance was highest in one village (Dar köprü) and was lovest in other village (Kasımlı). The results of the survey showed that the food consumption pattem changes due to seasons in both villages. In general, the average food consumption level was higher in Kasımlı than Darköprli. In both groups, the inadequate nutrients in the diets were vitamin A and C. However, vitamin A intake level in Darköprü where trachoma incidance was highest was significantly lower than other village. Prognosis of trachoma drug was 60 percent where it was 34.6 percent in the group who are taken only drug. These findings indicate that inadequate intake of vitamin A may be a factor in development of trachome in the population and, in the treatment of trachoma, administration of vitamin A together with drug might be helpful.
