A Research On Nutrıtıonal Status Of Çukurova Unıversıty Students

Abstract

This research was carried out to determine nutritional status of Çukurova University students. A total of 144 students (75 females, 69 males). 49.3 %of the students were living in dormitories, 33.3 % 17.4 % w'ith their families. Average age (±SD) was 2 2 .1± 1.9 years for males, 20.2± 1.4 years for females. Average body mass index (BMI) was 22.0±2.0 for males and 20.2±1.6 for females. 18.8 % of the males and 44 % of the females were found underweight. Average daily consumption of energy was 2758±858 cal for male, 1847±545 cal for female. It was found that 40 % o f total students consumed insufificiennt energy, 53 % of them (90 % for females )consumed insufficient iron. Average daily consumption of milk-yogurt, meat, legumes, other cereals (additionally bread for females) were less than needed. Althouth no significant relationships were found between energy consumption of the students (males and females ) and BMI, sporting, income, smoking, alcohol consumptions; the ages (for only males ), working (males and females ) and living conditions (only females ) were significantly associated with energy consumption(p<0.05). It was found that energy, protein, calsium and iron were consumed less by the students living in dormitories.
