Abstract

Malnutrition is common due to decreased and altered taste, decreased appetite and oral intake, vomiting, infections, hospitalization and psychosocial problems in children with chronic renal failure (CRF). In addition, fluid-electrolyte disturbances, metabolic acidosis, renal osteodystrophy, chronic anemia and decreased insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) exacerbate growth retardation. A medical nutrition therapy approach of a child with chronic kidney failure will be discussed in this article.
