Abstract

Aim: Stem cell transplantation (SCT) is a highly catabolic treatment which limits oral nutrient intake to a great extent. The aim of this study was to assess the nutritional status after SCT. Subjects and Methods: The study has been conducted on 10 lymphoma patients (5 female, 5 male) who had undergone SCT at Hacettepe University Institute of Oncology, Adult Oncology SCT Unit. Mean age was 31.4±5.1 years. Patients were observed for 3 months after SCT. Body composition was measured with Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), nutritional status was assessed by dietary intake records filled by patients. BeBiS software was used for energy and nutrient analyses and all datas were evaluated with SPSS version 15.0. Results: Consecutive measurements of body mass index (kg/m2), basal metabolic rate (kcal/d), total body water (L), body weight (kg) and lean body mass were found statistically significant (p<0.05). Periodic energy, carbohydrate, protein, fat intake level changes were found to be significant (p<0.05).Conclusion: Malnutrition, nutrient deficiency and other complications during the treatment might be avoided by regular measurements of necessary parametres and appropriate assessment of the patients before, during and after SCT treatment with a multidisciplinary approach.
