Abstract

Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FS) is a common disease characterized by diffuse, widespread pain and multiple tender points. Syndrome was sııbclassifıed as primaıy fibromyalgia (PFS) and secondaıy fibromyalgia (SFS). The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of dietary tryptophan in FS. Twenty fem a le patients with PFS, 20 with SFS and 20 female Controls, matched by age and body mass index, p articipated in this study. Dietary tryptophan intakes o f the FS and control subjects were assessed with "total nutrition score” (TNS) prepared fo r this study. Average daily consumption of tıyptophan (ADCT) values were also calculated based on this scoring system. A signifıcant difference was obsen>ed between TNS and ADCT values of FS patients and control subjects. TNS and ADCTs were signifıcantly lo\ver in botlı PFS and SFS groups. As a result, tryptophan rich diet can be recommended to these patients as a part of treatment regimen.
